

The monument is dedicated to Captain Tahir Bey who died
with four of his men when the small boat they were in struck a mine inside the
sytait while en route to his post in May 1915, at a time when the fighting on
the peninsula was raging. The insciption on the monument says : "In honour of the noble spirit of Captain Tahir who died
doing his duty in 1915, when the boat he was aboard hit a mine". there
is no information about the fate of the soldiers escorting Captain Tahir.
