IF STONES COULD SPEAK - ANZAC
Yes indeed, I
saw a bullethole on the righthand side of my jacket. Next to me was Nuri Bey
(an officer) : “Sir, you’ve been hit”, he said. I realised that if this “news”
would spread it would have a disasteous effect on the moral of our soldiers
and therefore I immediately put my hand over the officer’s mouth with my hand
and said : “Be quiet !!”.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk quoted in “Mustafa Kemal explains Çanakkale” (Ankara
1981), Rushen Eshref Ünaydin, p. 41
... Historically speaking however, this cannot possibly be the spot were this
event took place. It would have been suicidal for Mustafa Kemal to have
been standing at this point during the attack as he would have been completely exposed to
enemy fire. The actual event took place on the south eastern slope of
Chunuk Bair, on the Kördere slope (Blind Valley) some 60 to 70 metres from the
summit.
