It is incidently recorded that the commander of the 57th (whose name is given as “Ahuni Bey” and who is described as a good man and well loved) told his visitors that he had just received a letter from his children asking how long the war would last, and whether their father would be with them for the feast (*) as he had been the year before, and added how dreary it was without him.  Two hours later he was killed near his headquarters on Mortar Ridge by a shell from one of the newly-arrived British howitzers.
