The gunners of a 12 cm siege battery defeated the enemy at this point by a bayonet charge and so secured the 3rd Victory of Krithia, 7th June 1915

Transcribed and translated from the inscription on the “Son ok” Memorial

The three metre high memorial was built in 1948 to commemorate those Turkish soldiers who died in the Third battle of Krithia, many of whom who lie in unmarked graves nearby.
The Third battle of Krithia was fought between June 4 and June 6, and the failure of the Allied offensive to break throgh the Turkish lines all but spelt an end to hopes of capturing Achibaba.  Following French and British losses of 7000 men in the action, compared to Turkish losses of approximtely 5000, the Allied command abandoned frontal assaults in favour of smaller strategic and local attacks.
