The crude shelter on the right might at least catch a cooling breeze but the dugouts were like ovens. To add to their discomforts the occupants had to share their troglodytic existence with the Peninsula's rich variety of tarantulas, scorpions, giant centipedes and lesser creatures such as ants and beetles.
