The eight
members of the Mission slept at one end of the marquee and messed at the other.
Late that night we were waked by a distant wild chorus of yells coming from far
up range to the north. Hughes told us that the only Turkish military post now on
this part of the Peninsula was a corporal’s squad guarding a 6-inch gun which
the Turks had emplaced on the first main summit of the range, known to us as
Baby 700 ( that is, the smaller and nearer of two summits each 700 feet odd in
height).
