The Apex was considered the most vulnerable and dangerous post in the division’s area. The crowded scenes on the Apex in August had given way to tunnel and sandbag with no movement above ground.
Defences included an array of
five machine guns, four mortars, and a local improvisation of four catapults
that would throw grenades either singly or in volleys.
