Shrapnel Valley was the centre of our position. Initially the whole valley had
been a vast wilderness, but it was not long before the sappers had tapped there
for water and a couple of barrels appeared halfway up. About the same time a
field dressing station came into being in the area. As the position was
strategically important, our Infantry Brigade Headquarters claimed the top of
the valley; a New South Wales Battalion Headquarters kept house alongside.
